Topic: We are looking for a faculty member to showcase his or her course from 12:35-12:45.  This will be our jumping point for discussion.  As always, faculty may bring their own questions and thoughts about online teaching to share with the group.  If you are interested in showcasing your online class, please contact Laura Paciorek.  You are welcome to bring your lunch!

For help with annotating Flickr images

Hi! I noticed not everyone had annotated their images. The trick is to use Add Note:

The gives you squares to add annotations to. 

But that only shows when someone is actually IN the Flickr website.

To add the image with the annotations elsewhere you need to use the Mbedr service: click here to get to Mbedr. 

Videos on Demand

I have read so many good blogs so far that I now can't remember who wrote what.  But there was someone, either in Week 1 or 2, who had asked about video clips.  Our library offers a few databases that contain videos:

American History in Video provides the largest and richest collection of video available online for the study of American history. This release now provides 1479 titles, including new documentaries from PBS and archival footage, equaling approximately 462 hours.  Use your faculty Surf ID and password for access.

 

Intelecom is a searchable video clip database covering a wide variety of disciplines. Topic-specific clips average 3 to 5 minutes in length and are closed-captioned.  You can email me for the username and password.  Can't give it out on this blog since the blog can be accessed by the public, and that's a no-no with the database vendor. Theatre in Video represents hundreds of leading playwrights, actors and directors. Included in this database are online streaming video of live performances, as well as film documentaries, covering the pre-eminent names in theatre. The BBC Shakespeare series (60 titles) is also included.  Use your faculty Surf ID and password for access.

I made this jing video for my class that starts on Monday, but I can't figure out how to get it into an announcement on Blackboard. Help!!!

Collaborative Study Guides: Any Ideas?

Dear POT Program Participants:

I am trying to figure out the best way to allow students to create a shared, collaborative study guide in my online class.  Here's what I have researched so far:

Google Docs: I noticed that I can send a link to anyone I want through Google Docs that allows the person with the link to edit a document without having to log in.  I love the idea of not logging in to anything again and sending a link to my students is way easier than inviting them all to a wiki by entering each student's email (although I am happy to do so if it makes the most sense).  The Google Doc program could be problematic, though, since I have no way to track who is doing what.  I think I can also send an invite to each student through inputting emails if I use Google Docs, too.

PBWorks Wiki: I also experimented a little with creating a wiki in PBWorks.  This seemed a maybe a little more complex than necessary, but it might be useful.

All I know is that I want to avoid using the discussion board and I want it to be easy for my students.  I can't decide which would be the best for a class (or if there's some better option), so I thought I would post a question on the blog.  A wiki seems like it makes the most sense.  Does anyone know of a super-simple wiki service or is PBWorks it? What's interesting to me is that I can't, for the life of me, get my picture to post along with my posts! I have tried logging in, as Robert suggested, but no dice. Composing right here I can see my photo next to what I'm typing. Will it come up this time?
